The evolution of music has not been unlike the evolution of organisms on Earth; evolution started very slowly because there were so few organisms and they were so simple that the chances of mutation in their genes was much smaller. The longest period of evolution took place before organisms developed nuclei. This is called the Precambrian Era. The Precambrian era of music probably took place until the 16th century. At that point, all over the world, music was still used mainly as a means of tribal and religious expression. It was only available to the very rich, and the range of subjects was limited.
Shortly after this, however, people began to recognize the power of music as an end for itself. For the most part, it was still available only to the wealthy, but it began to be carried places by troubadours, who brought it to the rest of society. This enabled the spread of musical technique and knowledge among many

many more people, and could be compared to the Cambrian explosion. From that point on music grew to be part of daily life- but the lack of a large number of instruments made its evolution slow. Music did not change very much until the late 19th century. At this point, orchestral symphonies, marches, and other pieces became much more ornate, but did not change altogether too much.
Let’s fast forward to the cultural shifts of the 20th century. Music began to explode (as life would in this analogy) as society changed to necessitate (and imitate) forms such as pop, rock and roll, blues, country, and more. These forms would widen and divide and merge and give birth to new forms of music. Instruments were being proliferated that made new sounds possible. The electric guitar turned the world upside down!
Fast forward again to the past 20 years, when modern technology was introduced to music. At first, this made new editing techniques possible to studios, but as the equipment became cheaper, independent artists could afford it as well. In the past decade, however, this technology could be represented by software, giving anyone with a home computer access to spectacular programs that allow the creation of just about any kind of music played before now- and the rapid invention of new forms.
Electronic Dance Music was born well before this last stage of music’s evolution- but this stage is what has caused it to explode onto the music scene. A few short years ago, techno, trance, electronica, and ambient were underground forms of music. They were for inside clubs, raves, and largely ignored elsewhere.

A few short months ago, you could have asked someone if they listened to dubstep and gotten a funny look. Today, electronic DJ’s are perhaps even overplayed on the radio, found on car commercials, and enthusiastically swapped between friends on facebook. And you are more likely to get the funny looks if you don’t know what dubstep is.
