The Electronic Explosion

The evolution of music has not been unlike the evolution of organisms on Earth; evolution started very slowly because there were so few organisms and they were so simple that the chances of mutation in their genes was much smaller. The longest period of evolution took place before organisms developed nuclei. This is called the Precambrian Era. The Precambrian era of music probably took place until the 16th century. At that point, all over the world, music was still used mainly as a means of tribal and religious expression. It was only available to the very rich, and the range of subjects was limited.

Shortly after this, however, people began to recognize the power of music as an end for itself. For the most part, it was still available only to the wealthy, but it began to be carried places by troubadours, who brought it to the rest of society. This enabled the spread of musical technique and knowledge among many

many more people, and could be compared to the Cambrian explosion. From that point on music grew to be part of daily life- but the lack of a large number of instruments made its evolution slow. Music did not change very much until the late 19th century. At this point, orchestral symphonies, marches, and other pieces became much more ornate, but did not change altogether too much.

Let’s fast forward to the cultural shifts of the 20th century. Music began to explode (as life would in this analogy) as society changed to necessitate (and imitate) forms such as pop, rock and roll, blues, country, and more. These forms would widen and divide and merge and give birth to new forms of music. Instruments were being proliferated that made new sounds possible. The electric guitar turned the world upside down!

Fast forward again to the past 20 years, when modern technology was introduced to music. At first, this made new editing techniques possible to studios, but as the equipment became cheaper, independent artists could afford it as well. In the past decade, however, this technology could be represented by software, giving anyone with a home computer access to spectacular programs that allow the creation of just about any kind of music played before now- and the rapid invention of new forms.

Electronic Dance Music was born well before this last stage of music’s evolution- but this stage is what has caused it to explode onto the music scene. A few short years ago, techno, trance, electronica, and ambient were underground forms of music. They were for inside clubs, raves, and largely ignored elsewhere.

Thousands of Hypnotized Fans at Electric Zoo Festival

A few short months ago, you could have asked someone if they listened to dubstep and gotten a funny look. Today, electronic DJ’s are perhaps even overplayed on the radio, found on car commercials, and enthusiastically swapped between friends on facebook. And you are more likely to get the funny looks if you don’t know what dubstep is.

Pros and cons of CPOE

A CPOE means a computerized physician order entry and is used to record and maintain all the order entries in a computerized system. It is one of the best and most useful developments in the medical field. In a CPOE, all the entries can be accessed by management, clerical staff, doctors, nurses and all other physicians. Almost every large as well as small hospital uses a CPOE system for proper management of patient records. Not only hospitals, doctors and physicians also use small CPOE systems to keep record of all their patients.

There are many pros and cons of a CPOE system. Let’s have a detailed look at some of the major pros and cons of this system.

Pros of CPOE

  • In a CPOE system, everything is completely computerized where patient as well as physician doesn’t has to remember anything at all. CPOE encourages paper-free environment.
  • The orders, prescription, medicines, record and all other necessary information is maintained in the database, and can be accessed anytime upon need. So any doctor or physician can see all the history of the patient.
  • The orders and other details are available to all the departments throughout the hospital. And interestingly, the information can be retrieved in a number of ways through different devices at any time.
  • Every CPOE system is properly regulated and is secured to avoid any misuses by unauthorized people.
  • It gets quite easy for the hospital management to create different reports from the database. These reports are very helpful in predicting the future, trends and others.

Cons of CPOE

  • A computerized physician order entry system is very expensive and cannot be afforded by every hospital or physician.
  • It takes years to install and run a CPOE system. Therefore most of the hospitals avoid using CPOE due to its long installment tenure.
  • All the employees, nurses, physicians and clerks need to be trained properly before they can get used to the new system. Training needs resources and is a time-consuming process.
  • It is very tough to switch from paper to a paper-free computerized system, and it usually take years for the whole transition.

How to keep metals safe for longer durations

There are many ways of keeping metals safe for unlimited time period. Of course, by unlimited I don’t mean for 100 years, but yes, there are certain methods through which you can save metals for a decade or so quite easily. One of the best methods and the cheapest of all is plating. Plating (or coating) is one of the oldest methods of increasing the life of metals and other materials. Nickel plated metals, silver plated, gold plated and others are very common and we see them almost daily.

Plating has many types, categories and forms. And not all types of plating are used to safeguard the inner metal or material. Most types of plating or coating, that are used today, are for decorative purposes or for serving special purposes. When we say that we want to safe the metal for years, we actually mean that we want to keep metal safe from reacting with other elements, chemicals, metals and atmospheric chemicals. A metal can be safeguarded for years only if it is kept safe from chemical reactions. Most of metals are very reactive in nature for instance iron. And when such highly reactive metals are left in open air, they react with other elements in the atmosphere and thus lose their physical characteristics. Continue reading
